The HEFC hero for September is Omar Rezgui, our new Assistant Coordinator who began working at HEFC in July. He provides much-needed support by managing the implementation of the expanded Link2Feed database for registering and tracking our clients, implemented the Ottawa Food Bank, as part of a province-wide initiative. The funding for this position has been financed through a one-year grant from the Ottawa Food Bank.
Omar arrived in Ottawa as a permanent resident from Tangier, Morocco, in February 2025. He speaks three languages, English, French, and Arabic and is very aware of the challenges faced by many of our clients.
Volunteering at HEFC prior to being hired, Omar feels it is important to understand the situations faced by front line staff in any organization. He believes that his employment at HEFC is an opportunity to better appreciate the real issues faced by vulnerable people in Canada, as well as to meet the volunteers who are assisting them, while gaining a better appreciation of Canadian culture.
Indeed, working at a food bank is a unique opportunity to become familiar with a broad range of Canadians, from the clients who come to us for assistance to the organizations which supply our food and funding, and the volunteers who keep us functioning.
Welcome aboard Omar!
